Is it possible to identify a snake just by looking at the skin?

Found this snake skin sticking out of a retaining wall next to my house today. The rest of the skin is still inside the railroad tie. Never noticed the deep hole it was in until now!

Looks like a nice little den.

Uhhh...a better question would be...what kind of dam animal made that f'in hole.

Little update here... in addition to the skin I found, came home last night to a baby / very young snake on the front step. Do I have a whole family of them living around here somewheres??
