So my neighbor just shot at me....

No lie.. I live out in the boonies on 20 acres.. The way the property is laid out I can have a perfect 50 to 70 yd range that goes into the hill behind me.. Well to the left of the hill and at the bottom of it are some houses the closest one is about 150 yds away and a bunch of little pines in between us and them. Well I went out this evening to shoot my .243 before i hunt in the am to make sure is was still on and after about the 5th shot (over 15 minutes) the stupid neighbor comes out with a high power semi auto and runs about 20 rnds through it in my direction.. Like close enough I heard some limbs cracking.. As most of you know I have a load of kids.. They play in the woods where I heard the limbs cracking. My shooting is perfectly legal.. Is it legal for that nut to shoot at me like that?? I take that as a threat.. I called the police and he came out I explained and showed him where I shoot and showed him where their house is on google earth and he went to go check it out but you know how that goes.. He said for me to call if anything like it happens again.. But i think that is super crazy to just walk out your back door and start slingin bullets on some kinda ego trip... I am afraid to let my kids out of the house now.. And the thing is too in my neighborhood people hunt and shoot all the time but this dude was not shooting he came out after I shot a few times and unloaded..

If he does anything and I mean anything towards me and my family again I will prosecute to the fullest extent... Whatever that maybe.. And you can bet I will be adding even more posted signs on that stretch of line..

You are going to have to kill him. Sweep up behind his heels if you pull him onto your property.

Could it be possiable that he can tell that you are shooting in his direction but maybe he doesnt know that you have a safe back stop fo shooting? Maybe he just thinks your just slinging lead in his direction! Have you tried to show him how you shoot? I know my neighbors shoot but I cant say if they have a safe back stop or not, cant see from my property but it is close!

This.

Have you talked to the guy? Is he aware of your range? Gunshots are not exactly a comforting sound, this could just be one big misunderstanding.

Allow me to play the Devil's advocate. You are shooting on your property, in a safe manner. Your neighbor is well within hearing distance of your range. The next time you are going to shoot, go knock on his door, advise him you will be shooting, and maybe even invite him over to shoot a few rounds with you. Put his mind at ease, that your range is safe, he may have kids playing outside just like you. The worse that can happen is he will tell you to pound salt, and you will go shoot anyway.

This - If he has kids and you have kids maybe you can get the ladies to watch them, make a nice dinner and drink a few together. If my neighbor was shooting and I perceived it was in my direction. I may not fine 20 rounds at you but if I hollered and you didn't stop, I'd shot my 12 guage in your general direction. Not low mid you but you'd probably stop firing long enough for me to talk to you.

Why didn't you go over and call that guys hand. Same thing happened to me a couple of months ago. Betya he would have backed down no need to call the Police as you said no law was broken. But you show up face to face and say hey buddy it's your call now you called me out make your move, what is your problem! The guy would say hey this guy is crazy and surely not scared. I better not do this again I can't intimidate this dude he is crazy and you 2 would probably be the best of friends. You showed this guy the opposite buy calling the police he now knows you are afraid of him and like most bullies do will continue to harass you. Like Kenny Rogers song you got to know when to hold em and you got to know when to fold em.
I haven't heard a word from my neighbor he has been well behaved since I paid him a visit. when I pulled up he said can I help you? I said hoss it's your call now, I have made my move, You called me out, you have threatened me. Immediately he started him hawing around, I didn't call you out sir! You must be mistaken! No no when I yelled asked you to stop shooting that we were Turkey Hunting you showed your arse by showing me how much you could shoot in our direction. Go ahead you want to shoot someone here I am. I backed him down. But I was prepared to do what ever it took, he wasn't backing me down. Not a peep from him not even a gun fired since March.
Just my 2 cents worth. Some may disagree with me but I will fight my own battles or let them go!! It's the way I was raised

Shooting 50

His neighbor is not your neighbor and his may actually have a set. If both parties involved are like minded, this is a real good way to turn a bad situation in to a worse one with someone possibly getting dead. It used to be that when neighbors had a disagreement one of them toted a butt-whupin and although that still happens, many times one of them winds up shot over nothing but stubborn pride and arrogance.

IMHO, the OP handled it in the smartest way by getting the law involved early on and establishing a paper trail that can be used to show a pattern of behavior, if needed. It shows restraint and cool-headedness, traits that seem to be lacking in many today.

I had a neighbor shooting in my direction a couple of months ago. It was a 22LR, I live on a hill approx 80'-100' higher in elevation. I walked out to the side of my property so I wasn't in the line of fire and headed his way yelling "Hey". I had my carry gun just like always for "Justin".

The deal was tree rats, they were getting into his attic and he knew nothing about guns or gun safety. The conversation didn't start out very well but in the end I got a new place to hunt squirrels and he has been to the range with me, he even bought a .410 off of me. He has no need for the .410 because between me and my kids the squirrels are thinned out every year. Then again I had no need for the little .410 when I sold it to him so alls well now.

I suggest you go talk to him and invite him to come shoot. Hey neighbor, I heard you shooting the other day. I was spending so much money going to the tactical training schools that I built a range to save some money. I thought I'd come see if you wanted to shoot with me sometime?

LOL.... Love the not so subtle hint at competency there.

Sometimes all it takes is to get them to start thinking. Your mind is the most dangerous weapon you have..........well for some anyway. LOL!

A old Army buddy of mine that now works for a private contracting company doing Sic-Ops says , "We can't tell you what to think, but we can sure as heck give you something to think about."

georgia has a castle doctern if he was on your property and you felt threatened and he was shooting you were well with in your rights to turn his head into a canoe.
