So I've been interested in a pseudo scout-type rifle now that Ruger has come out with an American Ranch in 5.56 that accepts AR magazines. Yes I know that Col. Cooper specified a .308 cambering but like I said this is something loosely along that concept. I built a Marlin 88 with a forward rail mount and put a 2x pistol scope on it and I really liked shooting with both eyes open. This guy make a forward rail for a variety of bolt actions so a scout scope can be installed including the Ruger American:

I've read that a fixed power would be best but opinions range form 2, 2.5 to 4x as best. Anybody have a recommendation?

Burris makes an outstanding scout scope, 2-7x32mm with a ballistic plex reticule. I put one on a GSR Scout in .308 and it's one of my favorite rifles, especially suppressed.
