My "guess" would be that the recoil spring would need to be changed to cycle the fo'tay reliably. Maybe use one for the .38 Super? ** But a quick google turns up headspacing issues so looks like a "NoGo".
I was wondering the same thing. Given my fondness for the 1911 and the large quantity of 40sw (I really need to sell that Block) ammo I have I've been flirting with the idea of picking one up.
I've watched some videos on the subject but the opinions vary widely.
Don't do it!!! Only shoot ammunition that the manufacturer intended the gun to shoot. Anything else and your asking for a whole lot of trouble!

With an auto, the only thing holding the round in place is the extractor. Otherwise the 40 would go too far in the barrel for the firing pin to ignite the primer
