I Have not seen the inside of a deers rib cage in 30 years,I skin and never gut them usually within 30 minutes after the kill.
i do look for any signs of tumors or puss pockets.i killed a doe several years ago that had a tumor the size of a softball on top of spine.i just chalked that one up for the buzzards and killed another one.i have a friend that lives in North Carolina they had mandatory testing the first two weeks of season this year.that required cutting off the head and dropping it off at a testing site.and freezing the meat whole until the test results come back.

"According to DNR state wildlife veterinarian Kelly Straka, Michigan is the only state in the nation that has bTB established in wild deer."

Thankfully, it shouldn't be an issue down here, but good info regardless.

Yep. I hunt MI every year and they have been watching BTB since I first started hunting there around 1994.

The area I hunt up there also has active CWD.

Fun times.
