Speaker David Ralston casts doubt on bill to allow concealed firearms without permit

Signage carry's the weight of the law. Despite the fact there is no regulation on how the sign just be displayed, size, location or contents.

Folks who have never experienced this can't begin to appreciate how bad it is.

I worked in downtown Charlotte for a about 3 years, about the same as DT Atlanta.

Skyscrapers about the same.

The building owner could put one decal on one pane of glass on the ground floor, no background, regular 12 point type, and that made it illegal to carry a weapon anywhere in the 40 story building. They don't have to (or at least don't) have to put the notice at every entrance.

GA does have some of the best gun laws in the US right now. However I'd really like to see us become another Constitutional Carry state.

That being said, we'll be lucky to hold our own the next couple of years. This guy may be a political schmuck, but he's not wrong that the Dems are going to be beating down the doors in 2019 and 2020, and it's better to circle the wagons than try and push something new that simply gets more Dems elected.

Timing is everything. If we can get a GOP President in 2020 then would be the time to go for it. In the short haul, we need to play defense.
We've been playing defense long enough with short baby steps of progress every so often. It worked well for a while and got us to where we are today due largely to GCO but those methods became stale. We need to reclaim what we can, while we can. When the Dems have power again, they will absolutely be trying for gun control. That's when we have to play some defense. But we're not there right now and won't be for a while as long as Republicans can pull it together and listen to their constituents.

Yup. It took me a long time to break the habit of standing outside for a couple minutes diligently searching for a no guns sign, before entering an establishment when carrying.

I don't remember what it was like to not carry concealed... because I never did....It was illegal and I did it anyway....I carried for 10 years before I decided to get a permit, and that was just so I didn't have to wait on a background check. I don't care if the libs or socialists start running Ga, I still won't stop carrying. Feel free to run where ever you like, like the saying goes: Lead, follow or get the hell out of the way
You carried illegally for 10 years because you didn't want to wait on a background check?
How long did you think a background check was going to take?

I guess that's where we disagree. I think we're going to be fighting for our rights like never before in the next two years. This is just the calm before the storm.

Rather than push for Constitutional Carry, I think we need to be shoring up the bulwarks against 'universal' background checks and Red Flag laws. Those are the two that the Dems will be shoving down everyone's throats the next two years, and where Bloomberg will be spending all his money.

On the 'red flag' front it might even be worth writing a gun rights friendly version that includes due process to short circuit any attempt to pass one of the Bloomberg variants. Something that essentially streamlines the existing process to be more responsive and immediate, but still gives the defendant the same rights they have now. Who knows, it could become a model for other states as well, which would get rid of one of Bloomberg's most dangerous weapons against us.

On the 'universal' background front we need to educate lawmakers on why this isn't a problem in the first place (lots of studies showing criminals rarely buy guns from private sales), and that these laws turn innocent people into felons while not stopping criminals at all.

We only have a certain amount of political capital to use here in GA. We need to spend it on things that will make a difference, not on something that will get shot down anyway no matter how hard we push.

Universal background checks and red flags laws at the moment are federal issues (that should be fought vehemently) at least as far as Georgia is concerned, but CC is a state issue and there is ZERO reason for us not to have it and a very clear one why we should. If we don't get it now, our supposed 'right' will likely forever be a (temporary) privileged.

So far Red Flag laws haven't even been introduced at the federal level. They will be but they aren't up yet. The UBG law up there now is the old Manchin-Toomey re-warmed, but you can bet they will try and swap in the Bloomberg law at some point.

That being said... Universal BGC and Red Flag laws have ALL been implemented at the state level.

The simple fact is that we won't get CC now. The numbers in the legislature don't add up and the pressure to shoot it down will be intense. It's a fight we can't win this year and it would waste all our political ammo to try.

It would be a lot better to get an incremental win rather than a full on loss. If the GOP can take things in 2020 that will be the time to push for CC, but the next two years are going to be a defensive battle at best.

The point I was trying to make is they are NOT a Georgia STATE issue. They will be an issue because they will be a federal issue. CC currently IS a Georgia state issue. What 'incremental win' in Georgia are you alluding to?
