Spotting scope advice? (Sub 1k) Post Yellowstone upgrade

Optics of any type may be the best example of "You get what you pay for". Also, "Buy once, cry once."

I've seen little difference in spotting scopes that cost from around $400 to $800. Break the $1000 mark and you start seeing real optical improvement. This was recommended to me by cmshoot cmshoot and @REDX and it has proven to be everything I want or need.

Thanks! I certainly agree and have a couple of nice pairs of binoculars that were great to have in the park. That is the second time I have seen the Kowa recommended so will look into it!

I have looked for a good spotting scope and I end up researching everything to death when i am spending what I consider real money for a new tool. I ended up going here and buying the Athlon for a couple reasons. First, I was lucky enough to use one of these at my gun club and was very impressed with it. Secondly, Optics Planet had a good price on it ( $1400 to $999) and a 10% discount with free shipping. So I paid $972 complete. This is a FFP ( front focal plain spotting scope), and very clear. Plus it is a straight view scope, like a rifle or binoculars, not with a 90 degree eye piece, makes spotting from a car mount or a tripod much easier for me. Comes with a lifetime no questions asked warranty.
