Starting a AR10 build

If everything I came across was to long I wouldn't learn a damn thing. That's what holds people back from being excellent mechanics or any other field of interest. Like Bruce Lee said, if your cup is already full then there is no room for any other information. That why folks are so hesitant about trying to build an AR-10. The attitude of " They are not like AR-15's and no standard modular parts ". They go on about their business and dismiss the whole idea. Not me I want to know as much as possible so I am just as proficient on the AR-10 platform as I am the AR-15 platform. But we know there are a lot of guys in here that belong to the " KAC and YAC club ". They buy a 2000 dollar shelf rifle and automatically think they know it all about all on guns. Pitiful!

A few of you think that just because I spit out manure that is the equivalent of " just throw some duct tape on it " that I don't know anything. Then someone has fed themselves a grotesque wealth of misinformation.

Ok, I have the upper and lower ordered. The deal I got from Aero also came with a .936 adjustable gas block which I cant use as I need a .750 gas block. I was not going to panic since I can hopefully trade or sell it and get what I need. I am now looking at the lower parts kits. I notice that many of the parts are common to the AR15 parts kits. I am looking for something with a 6 position adjustable stock. I have a couple of Lower Parts Kits for an AR15. So what exactly is different. Can I buy the items that I need for the AR/LR308 that are different or is it best to just get a AR10 LPK.

I will probably have more questions before I am done, lol.

Most of all the AR-15 mil-spec lower parts will work be the same. FCG, springs and detents and the rest of the hard parts will swap over. You will find based on what manufacturer you use some can have different diameter pivot and take down pins. Those are really the only lower parts that will vary from manufacturer to manufacturer. The adj. stock kits will be AR-10 specific so just make sure to get it all in the same kit since the springs can be different lengths depending on buffer length. You will want a heavier buffer to control recoil. Use the standard AR-10 spring. A stiffer spring can cause the action to close faster so just do the heavier buffer and adj. gas block and you will do find. Any adj. AR-10 specific stock kit will work. You can start off with the buffer in the kit which will be anywhere from 3.8 to 5.4 ounces but most will come with the 3.8 up to 4 something. It just depends on how your rifle feels whether or not you'll want to go with the heavier buffer. Mine was so violent I just went with the 5.4 Oz which you won't find many kids that have that weight buffer. That's why I opted for the Kaw Valley spring and buffer that uses a slighter shorter tube and buffer. This is a decent kit that has the heavier buffer but you might want to start with a lighter one to see how your rifle acts first. It's not the least expensive but not the most expensive either.

Save yourself some aggravation and order an extra power hammer spring for the FCG. Also, if you plan on shooting suppressed or with a variety of ammo, I'd spend a few extra shekels and buy a Riflespeed adjustable gasblock.

I wouldn't run an adjustable gas block at all, unless you absolutely need it......and even then there are usually less expensive, more robust "fixes".

Aero sells an M5 LPK (M5 is what Aero calls their AR10). If you want to mix and match parts, here's a compatibility list:

My son and I assembled an AR10 two years ago. In this case we went with an Aero Precision M5. It's fairly straight forward. Just make sure you have the right tools (action rod, barrel nut/castle nut wrench, torque wrench, pin punches, lubes). It makes a big difference. The rifle stumbled with ejections the first 200 rounds. Now it purrs like a kitten.
