my mom lives in a mobile home. behind it is a steep bank. years ago they had a guy come out and put a septic tank tank in. basically stood it up on end in the bank. put a steel door on. has worked well as a storm shelter for years. i thought it was a smart idea.
Seriously though sounds like a great idea!Awfully tiny though. Not much room to do anything but sit and wait out the storm. I like the idea, but I take up a lot of room by myself. It would be really bad if it was long term (thinking days here)

great idea in my book !!my mom lives in a mobile home. behind it is a steep bank. years ago they had a guy come out and put a septic tank tank in. basically stood it up on end in the bank. put a steel door on. has worked well as a storm shelter for years. i thought it was a smart idea.
this actually what Im thinkin about doin myself ../@!@\..I wonder if anybody still builds root cellars? Seems to me that would be a good place to wait out a storm. Would also be useful for food storage, etc.
I know a feller that bought one of these 20' shipping containers and buried it in the side of a ridge close to his house. He welded one door shut, covered the container with a thick coat of tar, put french drains around it and put in a air vent & power. Works great for storage and storm pit. Think'n about a 10 footer myself.
Connexes like that were discussed in a similar thread a couple of weeks ago. The concern was brought up if it was buried deep enough to be safe, would the roof support the weight of the dirt/clay on top of it?
