Storm Shelters

my mom lives in a mobile home. behind it is a steep bank. years ago they had a guy come out and put a septic tank tank in. basically stood it up on end in the bank. put a steel door on. has worked well as a storm shelter for years. i thought it was a smart idea.

I sure hope they cleaned it out first ;) Seriously though sounds like a great idea!

Awfully tiny though. Not much room to do anything but sit and wait out the storm. I like the idea, but I take up a lot of room by myself. :) It would be really bad if it was long term (thinking days here)

Wheeler

I hear you but I don't think you'd be in it more than an hour or two. I'm a big un too Wheeler. I like the safe rooms to store stuff in but for a tornado shelter I'd rather be under the ground.

great idea in my book !!

I wonder if anybody still builds root cellars? Seems to me that would be a good place to wait out a storm. Would also be useful for food storage, etc.
this actually what Im thinkin about doin myself ../@!@\..

I know a feller that bought one of these 20' shipping containers and buried it in the side of a ridge close to his house. He welded one door shut, covered the container with a thick coat of tar, put french drains around it and put in a air vent & power. Works great for storage and storm pit. Think'n about a 10 footer myself.

Connexes like that were discussed in a similar thread a couple of weeks ago. The concern was brought up if it was buried deep enough to be safe, would the roof support the weight of the dirt/clay on top of it?

This one has about 4' of dirt on top of it at the back side and slopes down toward the door end to about 2' of dirt on top. Its been in the ground for bout 7 years with no problem. The land where its at has a good slope to it so any water runs off and he put a french drain all the way around it.

I geuss one might colapse if you buried it where the ground didnt drain and you pilled to much dirt on top of it.

Two guyz were killed here recently in a similar buried container...I just check in on this yesterday...you must support the dirt with something other than the container...something like a 10ft. storm pipe, then insert the container inside that!
