I'm about to buy one of two Savage .22 bolt action rifles. Neither one has sights, so I'll need to get a scope.

I'm going to get some cheap glass for now, and upgrade later down the road. The rifle will be a plinker and play toy, not a competition rifle.

I know that the difference between a 3x9x40 and a 3x9x50 is the size of the objective lens.

My question is, what is the practical difference? For plinking, does it make a difference?

BTW, Here are the two rifles.

The thumb hole stock on the first one fits my hand like a glove.

The second is just like the second pic, but has a fluted barrel and is OD Green (scope not included)

Both have the accutrigger and 21" 1in16 twist bull barrels

for plinking, no. just better light collection for low light. i like a smaller obj. so it can be mounted lower on the rifle.

For the thumbhole stock rifle, the larger objective is fine. The built in riser in the stock allows you to have a higher mounted scope.

For target 22s, I like the Simmons White Tail Classic or Aetec with adjustable objective. They work very well on 22s, and they can be had cheap, particularly used.
