Survival rifle

A Ruger 10/22 Takedown model is a far superior gun,
And only a few inches longer.
The only real advantage the AR7 rifle has its ability to float if you drop it out of your canoe.

Now, a Ruger 10/22 Takedown with a mylar “Happy Birthday” balloon tied to the sling swivel stud...
... better gun, and equally floaty!

I tried many different brands and just wouldn't run reliable for me which kinda ruined the whole survival theme! Lol
Loved the concept though.
Again, just my experience with owning one and now with several thousand rounds through my Ruger takedowns.
What he said. I've owned an older one from Charter and more recently one from some **** called Survival Arms from I guess the early 80s. They were fine when they were less than say $150.00 max. But the ones Henry makes now cost as much or more than a 10/22. In my book if you make a 22 rifle that's more than a 10/22 and has none of the aftermarket accessories of the 10/22 then you're just wasting my time and yours.
Seriously it's hard to get an AR7 to run thr9a full 7 round mag without some kind of failure. And the rare higher capacity mags available for them are even worse.

After swapping some stuff around, The one you gave me is good. I like it.

The 10/22 take-down is a great little rifle, although I had no problems with my Henry AR-7. The Henry does like hotter ammo, but so long as I used it it ran fine for me. I guess that's just another case of semi-22's having a mind of their own.

If you are looking for a truly low-mass survival' gun, you should check out the Chiappa 'Little Badger' guns.

They are only single shots, but they fold up into something the size of an old military holster and weigh almost nothing. Plus, being single shot they will use any type of ammo without a fuss.

Wow, ok. Thanks @atljetmech @thorn GAgunLAWbooklet GAgunLAWbooklet and letusbuyyourcar letusbuyyourcar ... great suggestions & info on the Ruger 10/22 Takedown. Guess I should change the thread title!
Don't get me wrong I had a lot of fun with my first Charter Arms AR7 but it took a good bit of tweaking to get it right. And to be fair I did buy it used and abused. But I got it for maybe $100.00 tops. For that kinda money I'd probably get another one. But since Henry owns the design now they charge way too much for what you're getting. They act like it's one of their brass and walnut lever guns which is clearly is not. Its plastic and aluminum.
