Protection from WHAT? You're in the WILDERNESS, remember? Any animal out there except maybe a wolf is more scared of you than you are of them, so nothing out there is "stalking you" most likely.
.22 is the best medicine in most scenarios!
22lr as stated ad nauseam. A mixed load of high vel and CB's would handle most game getting situations. If "unlimited ammo" translated into unlimited arrows though I'd like to make a go of it with my bow. Bending, breaking or flat out losing an arrow per squirrel is tough on a limited supply.
