Not really true either unless you bought it with the intent to resale. Nothing really changed here either. If you bought it today, got home and decided you don't like it. You are perfectly legal to sell it. As long as you have no reason to believe the person buying it cannot legally own it.
This has always been true. Buying with the intent to sell for profit without an FFL is illegal. Buying and selling cause it’s your **** and you’re allowed to do whatever you want with it isn’t illegal.
So what’s the legality on buying a gun as a gift?
Still legal as long as the recipient can legally own it.
