Ok so i picked up a Remington 788 .308 yesterday and im wanting to make a target/back up hunting rifle. I'm want to do a bipod, make this thing not kick like a pissed off mule, be good out to 500yrd, and not break the bank.
I don't really want to screw up the stock because it is the factory stock and wasn't even fired till my uncle got it 2 years ago and put 5 rounds through it to sight it in.
Im not goin to do a trigger or barrel job (i like the trigger and the barrel is basically new).
I know i have to put higher rings on it to match my sight line (what rings would be good?)
And its got a cheap 3x9 on it that i need to replace. I have a Nikko on my .270 that i really like, anyone have experiance with their target scopes? Or maybe a sightmark?
all ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Also, look at the Bushnell 4200 Elite. I think they are the best value in scopes around. Very clear glass, repeatable adjustments and tough as nails. They are rated for 10,000 rounds of .375 H&H. They simply will not fog no matter the conditions. I have experimented with a lot of scopes, everything from real cheap stuff to scopes that cost over $2,000. I have not bought and kept any scope other than some variation of the 4200 since I got my first one. I have tried to find others in this price range that are as good and nothing comes close. Before I tried the 4200 I had always considered Bushnell scopes junk. I have never used one, but I'm sure the newer (and more expensive) 6500 is also a very good scope. These are the ones I own.

I have taken Leupold VX III off of rifles to put these on. You will not be disappointed.

As for the bipod; it's hard to go wrong with a Harris.

This is a very handy little add on to the Harris.

ok so i just finished re staining the stock and all that good stuff. As of right now it has rings and bases but they are old and the rings are short. a 40mm objective only clears by maybe 1/4in, i want to get a 50mm for it and i was thinking of changing out my bases for a one piece steel base ( http://www.opticsplanet.net/egw-remington-788-picatinny-rail-scope-mount-bolt-action.html ). What height rings do i need to fit a 50mm? (still haven't decided on a scope yet.)

I prefer two piece bases myself. They're not as likely impart their influence onto the action. Plus most one piece mounts only allow the use three screws, while most two piece bases use four. It's what you have confidence in. I prefer and the Warne weaver type two piece steel bases and rings on many of my rifles.
