only problem is is that my 788 is only drilled and tapped and 3 screws

I haven't had a 788 in a while, and I was thinking that may be the case as I typed my post. A good 1 pc is in order for this app. Your choices are likely to be limited for this old rifle. I prefer the Picatinny or Weaver type cross slot, but the standard Redfield/Leupold turn in type may be your best bet. Those old 788's would sure shoot. My first Varmint rifle was a bone stock .243 with an old steel tubed Weaver scope. It may have cost me $200.00. I loaded 70g or 75gr HP's, and there wasn't a groundhog within 300yds that was safe from that rig. Those are some of the best memories I have of shooting with a good friend that's gone now. Man, did we have some fun with very little $$$.
