So I purchased an Egyptian FN49 from gunbroker about 2 weeks ago. Everything looked good with it. I took it to shoot yesterday for the first time.

I tried to use PPU 8mm ammo and the casing was too long and would not feed into the chamber. About 2/3 of the shell casing would go in. I did the bullet test on the end of the bore with the same round and way too much of the bullet is visible. I took the handguards off and the barrel has import markings at all and.

There is nothing in the chamber that would be causing this. I believe that the rifle was re-barreled for 7.62 x 51, but I dont have a round to definitively check.

I contacted the gunbroker seller and he stated he didnt know about the issue. He listed the rifle as all original and properly working, but admitted he had never fired it before. He and I have worked out a deal where I will ship it back to him at his expense and he will send me a Venezuelan FN49 in 7mm for $300 additional from me. It was listed on gunbroker at the time and he agreed to take it down....everything looks good with it from what I can tell. It is not matching. He said he will confirm the barrel on the Venezuelan before everything is set in stone. I originally bought the Egyptian for $675, so I would wind up with the Venezuelan FN49 for under $1000. Gunbroker completed auctions have these going for anywhere between $1050-$1350 recently, with a non-matching going for $1350 and a matching example closer to $1050.....not sure why.

He has a very high rating on gunbroker and those folks are super strict so thats comforting.

Anyone else have this FN49 variant?

Seems like he's making it good. GB's a good guide to market prices, but individual guns will sell for what a buyer will pay when a particular auction's running. Sometimes there's a bargain, sometimes two buyers will bid an item higher than you might expect, same things happens at any kind of auction, cars, antiques etc.

I have one. 7mm Mauser is a fine round for defense or target work. The FN is a little tough on the brass though.
I think I paid Mr. Turner at the gunshow in Perry about $850 for mine as it was in super fine condition with all cartouche clear on the wood.

8mm will 'almost' chamber in a 30.06 but it won't go all the way of course. About 3/8" is proud of the chamber mouth.

The Egyptian definitely has an Egyptian crest. 30/06 won’t chamber either

Buy some cerro-safe from Brownells or Midway USA, follow the instructions, and do a chamber casting. Very easy to do. It is inexpensive, and you can re-use it.
This way, you can see exactly what the barrel is chambered for. Is there a chance there is a burr in the chamber, or tiny piece of unburned powder? It doesn't take much.
