According to historian Adam Hochschild, on March 21, 1918 the Germans initiated their last offensive in WWI. Started with the largest and most ferocious artillery barrage of the war, that went on for five hours and could be heard across the channel in England. The Germans also used a new tactic to attack the Allies trenches. Groups of specially trained infantryman of seven to ten men attacked known machine gun positions using speed, stealth and copious hand grenades. Led the way for large infantry attacks. The attack was successful, but failed to turn the tide. These sneaky infantrymen were named "storm troopers".
