Nah brother it’s not. They have stores named ABC there, but there are several independent stores too. They do have some old school Blue Laws still hanging around like most southern states though, and closing at 7:00 PM is one of the rules. Remember they just got rid of the mini-bottle mandate in restaurants a few years ago.View attachment 7916897
Picked this up in Charleston while I was working up there for a week. Haven't tried anything else from High West, but this sounded interesting.
First of all, liquor selection in general in Charleston was pretty poor, but that's the first time I've seen liquor stores that close at 7pm. Didn't realize until that trip that S.C. is an ABC state with ridiculous ABC rules. Guess I've taken for granted how good we have it here in that regard.
As for this particular bottle, interesting is the best adjective I can come up with. Can't really figure out the taste. It's good, but a little weird. Probably wouldn't buy it again, but not too disappointed with it either.
Ah, I guess just the area I was working in was no good stores. We were in North Charleston most of the time near the Air Force Base and airport. Spent a whole week up there and only managed to hit up one seafood place the whole time.Nah brother it’s not. They have stores named ABC there, but there are several independent stores too. The Total Wine in Mt. Pleasant has the best selection. There’s a shop on Bay St thats good but pricey. The farther you get from the Peninsula proper the better the prices get. Except on Kiawah…..every damn thing there is twice as expensive as it should be.
I like the Barrel Proof Rye I picked up, but if that one tastes like banana anything I think I'll steer clear of it. I agree about the proof though, one pour is about all I want for a while.Banana nut bread. Pecan. The proof will get the throat from sip to sip.
It’s not over powering with the banana. Mostly nut bread with a hint of fruit and charred wood. I think the banana comes from the yeast strain they use. I’ve had other JDBP’s that had not as much bread and over the top banana flavor.I like the Barrel Proof Rye I picked up, but if that one tastes like banana anything I think I'll steer clear of it.
