The shock and awe of trying to buy ammo right now.

When will ammo prices and availability return to normal?

The only thing that kind of took me by surprise are some of the calibres that are being "hoarded". I expect .22/9mm/308/223/7.62 to disappear for the zombie apocalypse preparation, and Its not unexpected to pay .33-.35 cents a round for 9mm. What I didn't expect was 30/06. 45/70, 30-30/ 44 mag, birdshot etc to disappear so fast...lol... I can only hope the manufacturers are sending a good bit of those out west and to Alaska...where they really need em!....Never in a million years did I think that 10mm would be the easiest thing to find!

Those are produced in such low quantities compared to the nato cartridges that it doesn't take much to strip them out of stores. They also take a while to come back because the manufacturers put all machines into work cranking out the common rounds.

There are no US made primers to be found at sane prices. Even by ammo makers. I know for a fact that they are having to go overseas to get primers.

Yes, demand is up. But component production is down. Worldwide, thanks to covid shutdowns.
Amursk arsenal in Russia had to demill surplus corrosive primed ammo and reload cases with no-steel-penetrator bullets for civilian sales.
I received 3 emails this morning about Federal discontinuing ammo lines. They cannot source aluminum cases.
Do not blame hoarders for the lack of ammo.

Jeddak makes a good point in his post above. Sure people are buying what they can, but components are having to be sourced from overseas. I work for the largest beer company in the world, and we are having to source cans from overseas to keep production going.

If you look at the 2013 panic it took about a year for ammo (except 22) to become widely available again, and another year for prices to come back down. Looking at my SG Ammo history I see 9mm FMJ was back to under $12 a box by early 2015.

That being said, this was a bigger surge and we have a large group of new gun owners adding demand for both range and defensive ammo, so I'm guessing 3 years to catch back up this time, with prices getting back towards normal next Summer.

We are seeing more availability lately, but the prices won't drop until ammo is sitting on store shelves overnight, and we are a long way from that right now. I was at an indoor range the other day and they were getting $70 for 50 rounds of 9mm... And people were paying it with a smile, just happy to be able to shoot.

That kind of extreme pricing could be gone by the end of this Summer unless something else (politics, riots, etc.) kicks in to increase demand again. I just don't see that kind of thing as sustainable for too long.

But we still need to not only refill the entire supply chain, we have to have it sitting there for a while so distributors and retailers will start discounting it.

That was the beauty of 2016, for end-users at least. The whole distribution channel was filled to capacity expecting a huge surge in demand, and then Trump won and none of it showed up. Going back to my SDA orders, 9mm was actually cheaper in 2016-2017 than it was in 2012 before Sandy Hook.

So yeah, my money is on Summer of 2022 being when we should see 'normal' prices again.

I love my Glock 20 most for this reason!

But they had them in stock.

they had a ton of ammo in stock. Like everything, and considering the current market, the vast majority was within normal prices. Like .60 a round 5.56, .50 a round 9mm, your $25 box of hunting ammo like .30-06 etc...just the .22 LR stuck out for some reason. That was the only one where I was scratching my head. The shelf was full of it too, so I guess the consumers are making their statement.
