Same here. Only syrup in our house growing up. Still use it.

So since it is for us Poors, does that make it cheap?

There's no such thing anymore as "cheap" cane syrup. At least not that I've seen anywhere.

We made our own. 2 cups cane sugar, 1 cup water, and a tablespoon of maple extract. It was great when we camped and dad would make french toast and have the hot syrup. Pour that stuff on the sausage, bacon, and french toast. Good stuff.

My mom's dad had a cane mill in the yard at the farm house in Johnson County. Still had the worn track where the mule walked to turn the mill. Mom talked about the field hands cooking juice to syrup and breaking off the hard pieces from the sides of the copper pot to give the chillrens.
