Permits to hunt bighorn sheep are auctioned for hundreds of thousands of dollars — and that money has helped revive wild sheep populations and expand their territory

“As far as sheep-hunting being a rich man’s sport, that’s absolutely true,” said Vance Corrigan, 84, who lives along the Yellowstone River in Livingston, Mont., and is one of the most accomplished big-game hunters in the world. “But if it weren’t for the rich man, those sheep wouldn’t be there.”

Non-hunters often presume that the biggest prize in North America is something large and fierce — some kind of bear, perhaps, or an elk, moose or a mountain lion. But the widespread belief among serious hunters is that rams are the ultimate pursuit.

That is for two reasons. One, opportunities to hunt sheep are scarce, and often prohibitively expensive. Two, the hunts are among the most difficult, often lasting weeks in some of the most remote regions on Earth.

“For 100 years, it’s been somewhat at the pinnacle of big-game hunting, especially in the United States,” said Bob Anderson, a hunter and author of books on sheep-hunting. “But there weren’t a lot of people or sheep on the mountains. Now it’s become a cocktail party of sorts. Some well-to-do people have gotten into it, and they’ve driven the market up.”

There is actually a place you can hunt Big Horn in the US that requires nothing more than the purchase of a state licence, which is sold at about the same price as any other big game licence and is over the counter. The catch is that the area will have a quota of between 2 and 4 rams most years and once those are taken the season ends. Some years the quota fills within a couple of days, but there are others that it goes for a good while before it fills.

It's the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness Area in southern Montana.

Still not a bad deal, if you did your homework and planned for it.

Yep. Lots of scouting beforehand so you know where they are opening morning. Even if the tags fill quick there are other species that open for rifle very early there and on the same day, September 15th. Elk and Deer are draw, but have a near 100% success rate on the first try. Black Bear and Mountain Lion (I think) licences can be bought over the counter. You can also put in for Mountain Goat and Moose tags.

One thing to keep in mind is that this area has one of the highest concentrations of Grizzly Bear in the lower 48 and many say it's just a matter of time before you have one walks through your camp. They are also completely protected. In fact, to get a Black Bear tag you have to pass a bear identification test to make sure you won't shoot a Grizz by mistake.
