The vine that ate the South

Cursed be the nimrod dimwit who thought it would be a good idea to
bring kudzu to the South and use it as a shade plant! :frusty: :tsk:
This stuff is driving me crazy.

Chi Chi Chia! Chia House!

Just cut the root with a utility knife right where it comes out of the ground and then spray the stump with roundup and you’ll be fine.

I meet an older woman years ago who was the member of a Kudzu society. Her group worked to bring kudzu into the country. She was still apologizing for it.

If you look at photos and the few aerial photos of that period, most of Georgia was a barren, dry, dusty looking place. Not the lush green almost subtropical place it is today. Guess kudzu made sense to the people living in that time period.

Thought it was brought here more for erosion control? Heard someone say once that they thought cows might eat it too. Whatever the reason it was a dumb one in hindsight.
It was brought here for erosion control from all the years of bad farming practices u can still find evidence of those practices where u have ditches deep enough hide a vehicle and from finding area that had terraces barely wide enough to turn a mule and sweep around. But it does have its benefits cane be used for grazing some folks even cut & baled hay from it. YESS OLE KUDZU WAS BROUGHT IN TO HELP STOP SOIL ERSION FROM BACK IN THE DAY WHEN COTTON WAS KING ALL ACROSS THE SOUTH

Check out the museum at Piedmont NWR to see what kind of erosion happened in GA in the early 1900s. The land never completely healed. That's the reason for the extreme terrain throughout the refuge.
