There are a number of "generic" 4 post Taiwanese planers, 15 inch, for sale on craigslist. They might have different decals, controls, etc on the outside, but internally they are all the same. Once set up properly and with truly sharp knives, they will perform beautifully. For $700 or so, one can be upgraded with a byrd helical carbide cutterhead....you will never have to sharpen knives again. also, woods like tiger-maple will usually plane with no tearout..you can start sanding at 180 grit.
