Thinking about getting a German Shepherd

My GSD Diablo. Heis grabbing a toy out of my hand about 8 feet in the air. I got him from a buddy who used to breed them here. There are people on here with more experience, but my advice is stay way away from the American bloodlines that have a sloped back. This is hell on their hips and usually a pretty good sign they will have problems down the road. This isn't a guarantee, but I hate seeing traits bred into dogs because a show ring thinks its pretty.

Great dogs though. Shedding sucks, but is bearable compared to a husky. You should only baths them a few times a year. Usually when they blow their winter and summer coats or if they get really really dirty. Also depending on the dog you get they can be super energetic or just moderately. This can be noticed by someone who has experience with GSD puppies when you are buying them. Depending on what you are looking for in the dog will determine what dog you should get. In my experience everyone wants a true working dog, but only a few people realize and can handle the amount of work it takes for one. They need a job and will always need one so be warned if you don't want to work the dog every day.

I have seen German Shepherds do things I could not believe. I knew a guy that trained K9's for police work and he had one that would roll over, play dead and stop breathing. I swear the dog was almost human.

I wanted to get two German Shepherds because they are loyal, protective and generally great dogs, but my gf just HAD to have a French Mastiff. She is a good dog though. Very intelligent and protective. Lots of drool. Lots of huge piles in the yard. But a good dog.

Go to vonlotta.com very squared away kennel with lots of good info on their website. Sometimes they have pet quality shepards for sale/adoption as well. When looking for a puppy make sure the parents have hips certified (I forget the name of the verifying agency, but it is important) Due to over breeding hip issues are now more prevalent, as well as other genetic issues. Basically stay away from backyard breeders.Great dogs you'll be happy with your choice.

I got my GSD from Von Lotta. They have some of the best dogs in the state of Georgia. My dog is in my avatar. Her name is Nala. I wouldnt trade this dog for the world.
