My dad's guns from the 1940s and 1950's had real blued steel.
Not black.
In my generation, all "blue" guns were black in appearance. Some even looked grayish. (No, it wasn't a phosphate costing or pakerizing either).
Even "blued" S&W revolvers from the 1990s or later don't look blue enough for me, going by appearances alone.

My Colt Army Special, 1913 manufacture date, had the famous Colt royal blue finish.
I liked that a lot, and wish I could travel back in time to see that gun being unboxed by its first owner, before WWI.
