Tipping: I can't be the only one, right?

Why? They charge a fee and you pay them that full fee? What's the tip do?
Well I guess because it's a service industry. Not saying you're wrong or right. But I guess it also depends on the business. Like are they an independent contractor or working for a chain.
Although I must admit to being out of touch on hairdressers since I got married. My wife doesn't cut my hair or trim my facial hair nearly enough these days but if I went to a shop to get it done I might have to sleep at my Mom's for a while. She feels about other hairdressers the way I feel about car salesman. As Paulie Walnuts would put it "They're all whoo-ers."

I agree on the tipping though, positions that have never been tipped now wanting tips just for doing what they're already paid to do?..nope.
I tip my waitresses in cash so they can just pocket the cash and not have to claim it.
Just FYI for those who like to tip in cash to keep it "under the table", many of the POS (Point of Sale) computer systems recognize a $0.00 credit card tip and force the server/employee to claim a minimum $ amount, often 10%, because it "assumes" that a cash tip was left. So when you leave $0.00 on your $100 bill, the system forces a $10 or more tip entry. Same goes for paying in full with cash. The system often forces a minimum tip to be claimed when closing a cash check. It is best to leave a $0.01 penny tip on the card and the rest in cash. TRUST ME.

Okay I guess it's just a blanket statement here . But I think most folks in the service industry are probably worthy of some kind of gratuity. Hotel people, valet parking people, wait staff, delivery people etc. BUT...I draw the line at the business adding it to the bill/check or making it another screen I click through at the self checkout.

That pisses me off they'd force that on them, I never knew that. I'll start doing like $2 on the plastic and tip the rest in cash like you said

I figure we're all way overtaxed already so if I can help someone keep a few bucks in their pocket, I see no harm. It ain't exactly throwing tea in the harbor, just makes me feel a little better I suppose...

The tip goes to the person the rest goes to the owner
Many people don't realize that many hair stylists and beauticians have to "rent" the area they work at, and it can be quite pricey. You are correct, the owner of most chain places set the prices and the stylist only sees a percent of the sale after doing the work, again they are paying to work there.
