"I believe" (you know what they say about things you read on the interwebz) you need a trapping license to trap FURBEARERS. Coyotes are NOT considered furbearers in Georgia. If I had a nuisance coyote problem, I'd set a live trap without worry (and probably without success). Now setting leg holds.... I wouldn't do that.Well, I called the Macon DNR office and they said they're "pretty" sure I don't need a license to trap coyote...![]()
It really is terrible the inconsistent and vague information you get form WRD. Considering the way legislation is written, it's hard to blame them most of the time.Well, I called the Macon DNR office and they said they're "pretty" sure I don't need a license to trap coyote...![]()
And it took them 5 minutes to come up with the answer. Below is a copy and paste from the regulations online:It really is terrible the inconsistent and vague information you get form WRD. Considering the way legislation is written, it's hard to blame them most of the time.
But notice it specifically mentions FUR. Coyotes aren't furbearers. And it took them 5 minutes to come up with the answer. Below is a copy and paste from the regulations online:
Licenses
trapping license is required for trapping and selling fur, hides and pelts. Click here for license application (must be completed and then mailed or brought to License Office at 2065 US Hwy. 278, SE, Social Circle, GA 30025).
What if I'm trapping but not selling furs? I feel like this one can be interpreted both ways.
Can I name drop? But notice it specifically mentions FUR. Coyotes aren't furbearers.
Another cut and paste.
Season
The trapping season for furbearers is Dec. 1 - Feb. 28. There is no closed season for the trapping of beaver or coyote in this state.
Furbearer Species
O.C.G.A. § 27-1-2 (31) "Fur-bearing animals" means the following animals: mink, otter, raccoon, fox, opossum, muskrat, skunk, bobcat, and weasel.
So, set the coyote traps and if you get ticketed, tell them some guy on the interweb said it was kosher.![]()

Stamping of Traps
It is unlawful to trap wildlife except with traps which are at all times legibly stamped, etched, or tagged with the owner's name or owner's permanent trapper's identification number(You get this when you buy your license) provided by the department.
Why is it sufficient to only have your name on the trap if a license is required anyway?
