Or you can walk through the woods before the season starts and find a good patch of tore up ground where the deer are foraging for acorns. Walk downwind a little bit and make yourself comfortable with a good cushion at the base of a tree and wait for the deer to show up. It makes it easier to see more ground especially in the early month or so before the leaves fall.
If you simply must have a stand I prefer the ladder type. just walk in ,climb the ladder and hunt. I hate trying to find my way through the woods with a whole bunch of stuff on my back. I like to grab a pack with the essentials like TP grub,water and my rifle and carry as little as possible on the way in. It makes getting out much easier too especially if I'm dragging a deer.
