US Service Rifle 1903 - 1903A3 Discussion/ Pic Thread....

Looks like a nice rifle. I don't recall anything about a star stamped in that location. Are there any markings on the left side of the stock in the area above the trigger? Is there a mark in the recess for the mag cut-off? What is the barrel date? How about a pic of the markings on the reciever, is it a Springfield or RIA?

The sling is through the wrong swivel, that is the stacking swivel.

I'm out of town at the moment, but it is a Springfield and 10-4 on the sling. I noticed that when I bought it and didn't change it. I'll be sure to upload more pictures when I get back to the house. Thanks for your help and I terrestrial.

I'm thinking it's a hodgepodge of parts. The barrel is marked SA 5-42, there's an "S" in the indention where the magazine cutoff is, and the stock is stamped RA-P, which I think means Raritan Arsenal rebuild. Other than the nasty gash by the bolt handle, I'm pretty happy with it. It's my first non-sporterized '03. I still have no clue what the star is for.

The star designates a barrel that was gauged for nat'l matches. If you take the handguard off you should see a number stamped that begins with a letter and a 4-digit number. This number can be reseaeched to verify if it was ever used as NM rifle. Just google 1903 star gauge barrel.....

Thank you, art, for your time. I really appreciate your willingness to help. From what I've been able to find on the internet, the star gauge on a national match barrel was at the 6 o'clock position on the muzzle as seen below and it looked different than my barrel's star. Either way, I'm looking forward to shooting it!

Yes, that star is different and in the wrong location to be a star gauged barrel, and I have never heard of one on a barrel as late as 42.

Your stock is cut for a target sight, and sounds like an original Springfield C-stock, which is pretty desirable by itself, even with the target sight notch.

Did you get a good price on it?
