Visiting Germany in August - Advice

Hey Guys, Gals

My wife and I are headed to Germany at the end of August to go to a missionary friend's wedding. We are going to stay 2 weeks. This will be the first time I've ever left the US. The wedding is near Munich, so we are thinking about the following game plan.

- Fly in to Munich - Take a couple WWII walking tours, visit Dachau concentration camp
- Spend a couple days in Bavaria
- Day trip to Hitler's Eagle's Nest retreat
- Up to Berlin for a couple days
- Fly out of Berlin

I obviously enjoy WWII history.

What do our ODT Germany travelers think of my game plan? Are we missing out if we don't visit the Rhineland? Should we plan to spend a day in Salzburg, Austria?

We could fly in to Stuttgart or Frankfurt and then travel to Munich, but I'm afraid that if we pack those cities in we won't have enough time to relax and enjoy ourselves.

Have you considered a side trip to Zurich? A family friend runs a very nice hotel there. Would be happy to give you contact info and pass along a heads up to look for you.

Berlin has some nice historical places to visit, while there earlier this year took a tour of a Nuclear Bunker which was interesting. Eagles Nest was fun!!! Trip Advisor has a good listing you can use as well. Stay away from the crowds, especially at night. Lots of pick pockets out in the tourists areas.

Yes on Salzburg, both the castle and the salt mines are worth the visit.

Neuschwanstein Castle is well worth the stop, make sure you take the trail behind and above to the bridge.

Make sure you tour the Munich Municipal Museum, the English Garden, and Dachau.

If you like cars, the BMW Museum is very cool.

if you like aircraft and stuff from WWII just on the outskirts of Berlin is RAF Gatow. It was very interesting......lots of neat stuff for an old museum which the Government converted from the Royal Air Force. Bridge of spies was also interesting.

And don't go to Eagles Nest on a cloudy or foggy day. It ruins the view from up above!!!!!

And the advice on a/c is dead on. Stayed in Munich few years ago at a very nice hotel, that had a/c but it was set at 78 and wouldn't go lower. We were there early in September and it was too warm in the upper 80's.

It's a shame they destroyed the Führerbunker because it would have been an interesting place to visit. Read about it a few years ago and it's just a parking lot or something now.

If time and your location permits it, take a paddle boat cruise on the Rhine River. If you do, you will thank me later.
The Rhine Gorge especially.
You can't do everything, you are right to take your time and enjoy those things that interest you most.

Marienplatz is the main square in Munich. The Glockenspiel, a clock tower that houses motorized figurines is located in the Square. Stop by the Hofbrauhaus for a beer. I was there for Octoberfest back in my single days.
