There was numerous mulled wine and sausage vendors around the square to keep us warm. Buy a mug of warm wine for 4 euro and you get to keep the mug.
The Christmas market is a must if there... Late November early December... This was in Hamburg last year.

im Himmel, gibbs kein beer, varoom trinken weir is heir

In Heaven there is no beer, that's why we drink it here
Words from a German beer-drinking song

In Munchen, the Hofbräuhaus has been open 24/7 for about 500 years or so. Neuschwanstein is also striking distance.

We went for two weeks in 2013. Stuttgart, Munich, Black Forest, Neuschwanstien and a little in Austria.

Travel food - stop by any Aldi grocery store and they have fresh bread and pretzel machines. Pretzels were about 60 euro cents and were pretty tasty.

Munich - go to Dachau. Be prepared to be overwhelmed. Haufbrauhaus was a great place for lunch and a beer, the Rezidenz palace was a great rainy day stop.

Austria - one of the most impressive sites for us was Edinburg castle ruins. The alps all around, top of a mountain, nobody there but us. Enjoyed it more than Mad Ludwigs castle.

A Ford Focus will go a little over 100 mph with four Americans in it on the Autobahn, but it takes a while. :) We came home appreciating the road rules and how clean the roads were.

Enjoy and post pics!

Do yourself a HUGE favor and rent a nice car with a GPS. The company I used was called SIXT. I rented a Mercedes and travelled all around Germany and Holland. Most of their rentals will be manual transmission. LEARN THE STREET SIGNS! YES, There ARE INDEED speed limits on certain sections of the Autobahn. Also, It was brought to my attention that it is illegal to stop on the Autobahn except for an emergency.

I drove from Ramstein to Munich , Nuremberg , Haarlem , Amsterdam and then to Frankfurt.

When I go to Munich I stay at hotel Daniel right around the corner from the Leidseplein. I spend all my time at Haufbrahaus. I have been there 100 times. Love it!

Jägerschnitzel for the win! With Spaetzle and gravy.....aaaaaaaaagh........ (drool drool).

Most every town will have a WW2 story if you can get a local to tell it. The kaserne I was stationed at when we brought down the wall is no longer even there. But the locals know the story of how one idiot sniper almost got the entire town leveled. (Reminder: never snipe at an officer from a Field Artillery Unit.)

You can wander forever on the backroads and find all sorts of neat stuff. The country is beautiful, the food is awesome, and the beer is fabulous. Most medium sized towns have (or at least had) their own brewery.

My wife and I flew into Munich for our honeymoon in 2003. It was her first time outside the US and the Germans with subguns at the airport made her nervous.
Don't order a coke...you will get a 6oz hot one (no ice) for $8. Order a beer...24oz ice cold and $4.
Wiener schnitzel is outstanding.
We stayed in a little town (Fussen I think) in a B&B with a view of the Neuschwanstein castle. It was amazing.
One thing there in Fussen that was a real highlight of the trip was a playhouse on the lake that re-enacted the story of King Ludwig and Sissie his lover. It's a dinner theatre. Well worth the time!
We drove over the Alps (wow!) into Austria, visited Innsbruck, skied on a Glacier, and then went to Salzburg and did the whole Sound of Music thing. Highly recommend Salzburg, it is beautiful....lots to do.
Enjoy. We found the rural people friendly to Americans...in the cities... not so much.
If I went back now I think I would avoid places like Berlin, which is a shame, but I don't like being in a place (or spending my money) where I don't feel welcome...especially in today's times with the recent Muslim invasion. (That was not a problem when we were there.).

I'll tell a short story to illustrate:

We had just got out of airport in rental car and my wife was still a little nervous because of the gruff treatment in customs and the police with sub machine guns.
I pulled over into a little market (think combo of local nursery and fruit stand) to ask directions.
I found friendly folks who spoke English and headed back to car. I had left the little car running with the heater on because it was very cold (teens) and my wife was in the car. I was gone literally five minutes. As I opened door to share good news about directions I noticed my wife was sobbing uncontrollably! It turns out that right after I walked away some Nazi asshole tapped roughly on my wife's window...scaring the **** out of her. When she rolled her window down he proceeded to curse her in German. Bewildered, she replied with all she knew "sprecken z English?"
He then proceeded to haughtily tell her that in Germany, unlike America, we care about our air quality and don't leave our automobile engines running.

If I could have found that chicken**** Nazi there would be one less in the world and I'd probably still be in Germany. I had to work hard to get my wife over this and not let it ruin our honeymoon. She wanted to go home.
But in Bavaria and Austria we found wonderful, friendly people and had the trip of a lifetime.

So I can recommend rural Germany. Urban? Couldn't pay me to go there.

Too bad you will miss Spargelzeit. Never seen people so excited over a vegetable. As stated you will have no shortage of delicious food and drink.
