Weatherby Mark V

Would you mind explaining what you felt some of the noticeable differences were between the two?

The Mark V is a different bolt design (6 or 9 lug, depending on caliber), very smooth, polished action with a lot of refinement. It also has a finely tuned, adjustable trigger, a high end barrel, high gloss blueing, and usually a fancy stock.

For the last ten years or so, the Vanguard (which is basically a Mauser two lug design, made by Howa for Weatherby, exclusively sold at Walmart for many years) has available options for the high polish and a fancy stock mimicking the Mark V rifle. That's what Cabelas is clearing out: Looks like a Mark V, functions like a Vangaurd. The Vanguard deluxe models are more comparable to a dressy Winchester Model 70 than the Mark V.

The Vanguard is a good rifle, to be sure, but compared to the Mark V, it's kind of like the difference between a really fancy Toyota and a Mercedes. One is a good car trying to look like a luxury vehicle. The other is a luxury vehicle. Both do very well taking you from point A to point B.

If you are ever interested and in the area, I have a membership to ga gun club and can take you for free if you would like to shoot mine. Ammo is not cheap but you can get the chance to see what weatherby is all about. One time shooting it, you will fall in love! I don't even hunt with any other long gun now. (Mine is the 300 weatherby magnum if you were wondering). PM me if interested.
Jason. I have a pre-Mark-V South Gate 300 WB magnum I would love to shoot sometime. It's no safe queen, it's been on a few safari's in fact (though not with me), but it's still beautiful. One of the old custom Mauser's. Got it in trade for a Weatherby 22 and a S&W 357 magnum. But I've never had it on a range. I'm in Brookhaven/Atlanta. And I do have ammo. Maybe you can show me the Weatherby ropes sometime. -Larry

I've got the nine lug Made In Japan Euromark version. The previous owner bought a fiberglass stock for it when he got it. The wood is beautiful, the fiberglass is so much like wood that no one that has seen it realized until I told them that it was glass. Nice quality gun.
