So, it's a Howa-made action in a fancy Weatherby stock?
Not necessarily a bad thing, but certainly not the Mark V.
That is correct, I have owned a vanguard years ago and they are good guns. But they are no where near a mark v.

Would you mind explaining what you felt some of the noticeable differences were between the two?
Jason. I have a pre-Mark-V South Gate 300 WB magnum I would love to shoot sometime. It's no safe queen, it's been on a few safari's in fact (though not with me), but it's still beautiful. One of the old custom Mauser's. Got it in trade for a Weatherby 22 and a S&W 357 magnum. But I've never had it on a range. I'm in Brookhaven/Atlanta. And I do have ammo. Maybe you can show me the Weatherby ropes sometime. -LarryIf you are ever interested and in the area, I have a membership to ga gun club and can take you for free if you would like to shoot mine. Ammo is not cheap but you can get the chance to see what weatherby is all about. One time shooting it, you will fall in love! I don't even hunt with any other long gun now. (Mine is the 300 weatherby magnum if you were wondering). PM me if interested.
