What constitutes a "low ball offer"

If the asking price is equal to or more than it can be found new...any offer lower could be misconstrued as a low ball if the OP doesn't take it into consideration.

I have had a few people get upset at a low offer I have made. What many do not understand is that military and most first responders (police fire ems) get discounts from major manufacturers (Glock, springfield, Silencer Co, Ruger, Vortex just to name a few). If I can buy a new Glock at Ed's at $399 for flashing my LEO credentials, and you have a used Glock posted that I want, you should expect me to offer based on my cost. You just have to decide if you want to sell to me or hold out for someone that cannot buy at a reduced rate. I have had offers with military guys that could buy the gun I had new much cheaper than I could. Their offer did not offend me, I understood the gun was cheaper for them. I just had to decide how bad I needed to move the gun.
For example, Ed's pawn and public safety in Stockbridge has a bucket of police trade in Glocks right now that they are selling for $325 to the general public, it even looked like there were a couple of "C" models there. All of these guns already have night sights installed. Why would anyone pay more than $325 for a used Glock unless it was some kinda specialty model? Yet there are a bunch on here right now for more........these people that have used Glocks for more $400 plus should expect to get a low offer so long as there are better deals at the stores. Just my two cents.

I have no incentive to provide a discount to a government employee. A retailer or company might in order to promote their social image and bring more customers in the door, but not this private citizen. I'd imagine that's the case for many private citizens on here.

Before listing a firearm on here, I've almost always taken it around to a couple of local places and know what I can get for the firearm from them. If your offer is on par with theirs (or less), why would I take the time to schedule a meet and deal with potential BS (not showing, wanting a BOS, etc) when I can get my money same-day? In some cases, I've been offered more than what I feel I'd get on here, and I just go ahead and get rid of it instead of making an extra trip. Gun market is hot right now and retailers need used firearms as not everyone wants to buy a brand spanking new gun.

As far as overpaying for items, a lot of you are underestimating the value of not having to fill out a 4473 that exists for many folks. Or not paying sales tax, or avoiding a transfer fee. Same reason Glock parts kits sans frame are going for a mini fortune on eBay right now, sometimes more than the entire firearm.

I don't care one whit if "you gotta eat too" or if "there ain't 'nuff meat on the bone for me." I am not a firearms wholesaler. I consider carefully my asking price and I have researched like items. I will not sell sail cell a firearm that has a serious flaw or one that has had a flaw that I have not rectified in a professional manner. I have purchased firearms that needed a lot of "fixing" (not here) and I've negotiated that in my final offer when buying it. Most times the seller cellar sailor had no idea that the issue existed or was disingenuous in his representation of the firearm's condition.

If I offer a firearm for sale here it's priced to market. If you want it, buy it. If you are a private individual and are engaged in the business of buying and selling firearms for profit, you will be disappointed in my attitude when dealing with you (fair warning). I have lots of friends and business associates local to me that are licensed and if I am ever worried about someone getting to "eat too", I'll take my business to them as I know they are good people and I've traded with them in the past. If I have a rifle listed at $1,500 and you offer $1,000 and the last closed gunbroker auction with feedback has a hammer price of $1,550, why are you wasting my time? You think I can't list a rifle on GB, sell it and pack the damned thing and take it to the Post Office myself?

Does the (seemingly) obligatory "how many mags are you gonna GIVE me" come under the "low ball" banner?
How about "how much ammo are you gonna GIVE me"?
If I make an offer I almost always include the statement "No is an acceptable answer'. Because I know most folks on the ODT inflate their prices enough to make up for the low ball offer. So a listing at $450 means most people will take $400, right?

But then some will post $400 and get peeved at the offers of $350.

C'est l'guère.

Make me an offer, but please stop asking what I'm going to "GIVE" you.

I believe that every seller should ask what they want to ask for their property. If the seller does not want offers lower than the stated price, and thereby avoiding what they feel is a “lowball” offer, then the seller has every right to list his item as “firm” or use the phrase, “not negotiable”. However, if the seller does not state his price as firm, any offer is just an offer. All the seller has to type in response to the offer, if it is not what the seller wants for the item, is, No Thanks. That takes very little time, and in my opinion, is the proper way to deal with an offer lower than the seller wants to accept.

This is a public forum. You get all kinds on this site. If you place an ad and don’t state your price is firm, or not negotiable, you will get offers. Some decent offers, some horrible offers, but as I said, any offer to me is just an offer. The seller does not have to accept.

I know you are asking $350 but I can only afford $250. Will you take $250 for it if I drive their today with one hand and the cash in the other hand????? Let me know ASAP. I got another guy with the exact same gun waiting on me if you can't accept my offer. Thanks and God bless you and your family.
