The next assault weapon ban will almost certainly cover any "pistol" that uses detachable magazines (or drums, whatever they are, regardless of the design or what it is called) that attach to the gun in any location other than through the grip frame / handle. If we're lucky, we can stop them from passing a ban on semi-auto pistols that use any detachable mags in any location. That's what they really want.
CONCEPT GUN:
A semi-auto bullpup "pistol" that uses a fixed high-capacity magazine on the top, with the barrel below that tube or mag. The mag isn't removable, but if it holds 20 to 50 rounds, it might not really matter.
The barrel could be 10" long, with the chamber approximately over your wrist.
The feeding end of the mag would be an inch or two closer to you.
The bolt and recoil spring would be over your forearm.
It would have an "arm brace" instead of a butt stock, and it would wrap around your forearm just in front of your elbow.
Total length would be about 20" and it would be quite accurate. Good to shoot with optics at 3X the effective range of a normal handgun.
This weapon would, inherently and naturally, not have any of the prohibited "assault weapon" features, although perhaps the magazine, though not detachable at all, would still count as one point because it wasn't located in the grip. But it took 2 points to ban a gun, not just one. Perhaps it would get that 2nd point by weighing over 50 oz. empty, but on the other hand maybe modern alloys and carbon-fiber parts could be used to keep the empty weight under 50 oz. (3 and 1/8 lbs.)
