Basic spices I use for a home made rub: 1/4 cup paprika, 1/8 cup brown sugar, 1/2 cup turbinado sugar, 1/8 cup kosher salt, 2 1/2 tsp garlic powder, 1/2 tsp dried tyme, 1/2 tsp dried oregano, 1 tsp chili powder, 1/2 tsp chipotle powder. Substitute as needed, play around with the mix until you create your own recipe. A mustard smear up front will hold the rub mixture and add flavor. Good Luck and good eats!

+1 on using mustard as a binder. I saw an old hand using it and tried it. Game changer on ribs.

Add coffee to that and a pinch of mustard powder is my rub.

Yep, I forgot the mustard powder!! I pretty much have a box of spices and just throw things together. But absolutely no to the coffee. I can't stand the taste and don't eat anything w/ coffee in it.

I'm an apple cider vinegar vuy with a 1/4 cup brown sugar some salt garlic onion powder soak over night kinda guy and if i use sauce its always on the side and usually my own mustard/vinegar base sauce.
