What have you been reading?

The Martian by Andy Weir.

Astronaut is left for dead on Mars and has to find a way to survive.

Riveting! Ridley Scott is making a movie out of it.

"The Last 100 Days" of WW2. John Toland.

Once again, modern research of old documents shows that FDR was a socialist, and thought he could "talk" Stalin into anything. His administration screwed the Brits and he maneuvered Churchill into a secondary role. The Germans weren't all Nazis (boy, is that hard for America to swallow), and the Russians committed an equal amount or more war cirmes than the Wehrmacht. The US knew more about the atrocities against the Poles than they admitted, but caved to Stalin because FDR thought "if I give him everything he wants", we'll have peace.

Sorry for the rant. I've read a little too much lately that all points to this same revelation.

But, hey, we won WW2!

There are a lot of small vignettes about US POWs that marched back from Eastern Prussia ahead of the Russians. One group took over control of a small town and had to "police" it from the Russians. Another set of POWs actually carried one of their elderly German guards along with them (literally carried him on their backs), while a POW carried the German's rifle.

World War Z was pretty good
Heinlen's Stranger In a Strange Land is one of my favorites
The Neal Stephenson Quicksilver baroque trilogy is good so far
Also like the Lee Child Jack Reacher series
And, of course, the Qur'an... :behindsofa:

Got in my Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook 4th Edition a week or so ago. It may be the most informative reloading manual I've ever read. The first 100 pages or so is more than you ever wanted to know about loading cast bullets and just cast bullets in general. Most of it is written by Mike Venturino, I typically enjoy what he writes in magazines.

Lots of load data but I do feel that they left out a lot of bullet weights and most of the data is to light, I know for a fact that some of the better hard cast bullets can be driven harder than they list without leading.

All in all though a good manual and it has occupied my night time reading for the last week or so.

Just finished an indie series that's was surprisingly good.

The first book is called "The Paper Magician", and it's set in Victorian England, but with different kinds of magic around certain materials (paper, glass, rubber, bakelite, etc.). The whole series takes place through the eye's of a young female apprentice to a 'paper' magician, and while the characters are a little one-dimensional, the plot and story are great.

Plus it's priced reasonably at $5 a book (Kindle).

Ya we did a real **** job there

We should have allowed a conditional surrender from thr nazis so they could focus on defending their homeland from communist invaders as we occupied them. The ussr forces were in no way our true ally

Just started Stephen Pressfield's "Gates of Fire" from the recommendation from the other thread.
I haven't read it in several years. I think I'll pick it up again. Let me know what you think.

Just finished it, haven't had much reading time lately.

I thought it started pretty slow, it was hard to keep all of the Greek language stuff straight in my head. Once I got going on it I liked it a lot. I thought the fight "scenes" were well written. I hate reading a book where the fights are horrible. Overall I was pleased with it and will probably read more of his work.
