Another vote for an STI Trojan. They only make 2011s now, but if you can find a used one, I'm sure you'd love it.

Staccato xl is awesome looking but it’s $3400.
Kimber makes that Pro Carry for around $900. Or the Dan Wesson Guardian is around $1300 - 1500. (best fitted gun that isn't "custom" that you will find will be a DW) Or, as others have noted, a used Les Baer.
I have a Rock Island in 9 MM that shoots excellent after just a few minor tweeks to the trigger and ejector. The heavy frame takes away almost all recoil and makes it a fun range toy. Surprisingly accurate. And, in your budget, you could buy two. Or more 45 ammo with your savings.

Gonna go ahead and throw my 2 cents in. Really love my Springfield EMP and it is a fantastic carry. So very accurate for a 3 inch and always functions perfectly.

Nothing wrong with my 72 Colt 1911 9 mm. Always have fun throwing lead down range with this one.
