That makes a fella take a shot he's never made in his life and really has no idea how to make or even whether his gun will hold a pattern that far?

From experience, it exposes those that shoot shotguns all year and those, me included, that don't, but like to go on dove shoots. It's fun. It's comraderie. And they taste good. Keep making that shot.. 
Shoot some sporting clays it will help you understand leads and look up and learn about the shot stream on shotguns.another thing practice with shells you hunt with each different loads will shoot different.also check the pattern on your gun at 30 yards a lot of them will be off,you basically seeing if your gun is shooting were you aim.

In all seriousness, many individuals are not able to judge distances with any level of accuracy...especially in an open field. Folks honestly believe that 3" dot that is approaching the field is only 30 to 45 yards away when the birds are often 100+ yards out.
One of the best solutions is to attend a dove clinic at your local Clay Target Range.
Have seen clubs set crossing and overhead targets to simulate dove landing into a field at 25, 35, 45 and 75 yards to help folks see and understand the range of their shotgun. Most folks are successful at the shorter yardages, but are surprised that even with those "high brass" high velocity loads, that a 75+ yard shot has a very low probability of success.

Steel for dove?? When did that start?? Well I hunt my own land
You gota practice. Get your gun to pattern the best that it can. I like #6s. But use what you like. Use low brass because it will pattern best. I pattern my gun at like 30yds I think it was. It's been a while. Try different ammo and chokes to figure out best pattern. You'll be amazed how well it will shoot if you do this
