What is the best way to make sure you're not buying a stolen gun on ODT?

I tried to get my local PD to run the numbers on a pistol before and this was roughly the response I recieved " Sir WE WILL NOT DO THAT. If you at any time wonder if a gun was stolen you SHOULD NOT HAVE BOUGHT IT"

I tried to explain that I was not worried about the person I got it from, but I have no way of knowing how many people had it before me and there could have easily been one shady guy a long time ago....

She told me "WE DON'T RUN NUMBERS" and hung up on me.

Never fooled with asking again since then.

Some won't, they certainly don't HAVE too.

there is no public database. they will run the number only if you bring it to them, because they want to get something out of it. either the possibility of a charge or to confiscate

and i figure they SHOULD HAVE to run it. i mean what good are they otherwise?

Just put the gun your car go drive around and find a cop and keep driving by him with no seatbelt on. Once you are pulled over tell him that you do in fact have a gun. He will most likely run it and most likely give you a ticket, but it's only $15 haha. I have never felt the need to gave the sn run on any of the guns I have gotten here though. If for some reason I felt that I needed to I probably shouldn't be going through with the deal anyways.

research who you are buying the firearm from. Read feedback comments and ask basic questions about the firearm. Some people do not want people running serial numbers due to the fact that it puts the gun into the "SYSTEM."

Seriously? I mean I think it's great they are willing to do this, but doesn't the PD get pissed off for people calling on matters that aren't actual situations? I mean that's a call that could've blocked someone that's actually calling for a serious matter that might be life or death. Do you actually dial 911 or call the office? I'm just curious.

I don't dial 911 lol. I call the watch office. They don't care and have never said anything about it. They do tell me when they are really busy or not. If they are holding calls then of course they won't come for a while and I don't blame them.

I went to the Forsyth south precinct and left the gun in my car unloaded in a case. I went in and told the dispatch that I had one that I wanted to run the numbers on because I started to have a bad feeling about it after I bought it. That is important because if you buy a weapon you suspect is stolen you will get in bad trouble!

Mine turned out to be clean and I left happy. If it would have been stolen they would have had to keep it. They were pretty cool about it.
