What is the best way to make sure you're not buying a stolen gun on ODT?

Well I get the serial number and run it..

But other ways is deal with an established member and stay away from the one hit wonders..

Talk to the seller and ask basic questions. Where did they get it, how long have they had it, approximate round count . ask about upgrades and any work done on it. Most people will be able to answer these basic questions with confidence or will be able to tell you they got it in a trade. Someone who is making some wild story up about the item may be either completely clueless or could be a little questionable...

On a note about running a serial number,

Just because it does not come back stolen does not mean it is not. It just means it has not been reported stolen using that serial number.

I have taken hundreds of reports on stolen items and the people do not have serial numbers for anything.

Usually I have em lift the pants leg(just a bit, don't get an ideas) and check that ankle for an electronic tether. If they have that, I know I'm dealing with an upstanding citizen and have no worries about buying from them :D

Seriously about all you can do is have the serial run by LEO.

I thought it was against the rules to use the system for personal use. I called the sheriffs office once to ask about running a number and they said they won't do it and the only way to find out is to get caught with it.

I dont run it myself. There is ways to legally have the numbers checked. Its all in how you articulate it.

I just call the police and they send an officer out. Done this over 20 times. The same officer usually comes to my house. He takes the gun, runs it and thats it. Very easy process.

Seriously? I mean I think it's great they are willing to do this, but doesn't the PD get pissed off for people calling on matters that aren't actual situations? I mean that's a call that could've blocked someone that's actually calling for a serious matter that might be life or death. Do you actually dial 911 or call the office? I'm just curious.
