i took in on a collection buy and can’t figure what it is, any experts?

Yep, Jap Arisaka.

Don't ask me which model or caliber. But the ground off mum is a sure giveaway.

Thank you it would appear that is correct, pretty cool old rifle. now to figure what type it is 38 or 99 so 7.7 or 6.5. may not matter since ammo seems hard to come by...

make sure the barrel wasn't altered to shoot a caliber never offered at the factory. These riles were plentiful and cheap so lots of folks changed their caliber to a more common American caliber.

The rifle also had a scope mount installed at one time from the hole in the top of receiver, this was probably someones hunting rifle

A lot of these were imported with either one hole or two holes side by side already in them.
The grind mark was done while these were still in japan. Cant remember what the flower/emblem was called but very few actually made it out with the flower still on them. Something to do with honor or something like that. Im sure someone more knowledgeable will chime in
