So I decided to put a optic on my DSA FAL 7.62x51 (.308 Nato). I want something that can go out to around 100-400 yards. I just put the Aimpoint on it to see how it looked. Defiantly want a powered scope. Was thinking Vortex but need to keep it under $500. What would you use?

Leupold VariX IV. Not as fancy as tactical scopes, but have the best, clearest glass and will not fail you.

Leupold VX-R Patrol 3-9. 30MM tube, Firedot illumination, Mil reticle/.1 mil turrets, and right in your price point...heck, I paid $525 used with an ADM mount for mine.

My take: 1-4's are a waste. Not enough magnification to really be useful and you give up uber much field of view and speed over a 1X red dot like an Aimpoint. The 3-9 VX-R with the firedot turned on works like an ACOG on 3X, but you also have the ability to dial up to 9X on the top end. Useful reticle as well as easily adjustable turrets.

ETA: if you don't want to wait/shop around, the Leupold Mark AR Mod 1 is similar enough to get the job done for about $150 less. You're giving up a 30mm tube for a 1", getting a green Firedot vs red, and giving up a little glass quality.

To help you solve this issue, I tell you what I will do.
I will take the FAL off of your hands, and then you wont have to worry about an optic at all, and think of all the money you will save!
