I've sat in front of this computer toooooo long. I can't believe I'm jumping in on this thread, and this thread is still going. Cabin Fever is running high. Ok, here goes. It's a simple door or drawer latch that attaches to a lockset for locking off an old metal cabinet or desk drawer, maybe off an old fire proof file cabinet. It's a latch of some kind. I've been in the office supply/machine business for 33 years, and seen a bunch of similar pieces over the years. Think about your teachers old metal desk that was manufactured in the 50's or 60's. Maybe that old cabinet that supplies were kept in at school or any old government building. They were built to last back then. Now, we think an old piece of aluminum from an old lockset is a high-tech widget?
That is still vague. It might be this. It's probably this. I actually had a genuine interest in finding out exactly what it was. I guess there will always be haters to hate, more than a few in this thread.
Some people have gotten close but still no cigar.
