What to do when the lights go out

Yeah, I'm talking more about the way people conduct themselves vs. technology available. It takes surprisingly little for folks to go all "lord of the flies".

I agree and so do the experts.

I saw a program a few years back and I remember they said we were 9 meals from disaster. After 3 days of not eating and not being able to feed your kids people go whacko. They said after 3 days you could justify almost any type of behavior to yourself especially when it comes to feeding your children. Another thing I remember them saying from that show was that the most dangerous of people would be young males. They said something about, because of their age they haven't the conscience (they didn't say conscience but something like that) that adult males have, which gives us pause. They have no pause at all.

It would be damn spooky to be around in times like those....

I pray to never see it. But the United States has been lucky for a long time to see nothing like the rest rest of the world goes through. Wars, starvation and disease. I bet in my lifetime at some point it will get bad. I just pray I can keep the family safe.

Well my wife is right on top of such preparedness. And as you would imagine, as such she don't like me discussing such things in open forums. But I'm pretty proud to say that for a couple of poor folks with very little income we are prepared much better than folks with 5 times our income.

The biggest risk is actually not electricity per se', it's the delivery of liquid fuels. There would be an enormous collapse if natural gas delivery was interrupted! The ripple effect would reverberate for months! Pipeline delivery is isolated and insulated from the electrical grid but that doesn't mean the affect wouldn't be felt by the end user.

Energy delivery is our Achilles heel.

You guys should really read into how "The Grid" works. Even if they were able to disrupt the interconnections, they can't just go in and wholesale shut down power plants.

The best analogy I can think of is the road system. Think of the power grid like roads. The main highways allow for the big plants to send their excess power (whatever isn't needed locally), to places where the demand is high, but if the interstate is shut down, there are still multiple "local roads" that can be used to deliver the goods.

Yes, there would be some localized black and brown-outs in large cities and very rural areas, but not a "Blasted into the Stone Age" type scenario. You can thank First Energy for that. There were a lot of changes that were made after the NorthEast blackout in 2003.

I know how the grid works. I also know that even with the improvements, there are only so many qualified repair crews to go around. Depending on how large of an area affected (or areas), it's going to take some time to get everything back online.

No tin foil needed here. Are we ready as a nation for this, to be blasted into the stone age. http://www.cnn.com/2014/11/20/politics/nsa-china-power-grid/index.html?hpt=hp_t2

Tesla had the answer for this years ago....
