What to look out for on a 1998 mustang GT

At least as a corporation they finally circled the problem

That is an oval.

Going to be fun ride. I owned a silver '98 auto GT back when I was 17. Doesn't take much to smoke those tires, won't win many races but it's fun.

I never had any issues with mine. Had an off-road X pipe w-Flowasters mufflers, when I wanted to bang gears I had a TKO 500 with a Steeda shifter & McCloud dual friction clutch installed. Sure miss that ride.

Thanks for all the input. Going to check it out Friday. 1st thing on my list is that intake, second is ODB scanning it. then the list keeps going...

There's sometimes wear on the door panels, but replacement's are available from places like LMR. It'll give you an idea what the cost to fix when negotiating the price.

Not really any different than most any used car from 1998. :D

If he can swing a little more money, the 2005-2009 GTs are better in every way and have depreciated a lot by now.

Mustang used to be my favorite car. But it's been a long time since I've driven one. The 4.6 is a pretty good engine. I've seen a few of them with 300k miles on them. If it still has that E4OD transmission, be very cautious. The trouble I've been having with the older Fords lately is the computers and check engine lights. As long as you drive it regularly you might be OK. Getting parts and finding someone that knows how to work on the older ones is getting harder to find. You seem to be mechanically inclined, some of your older post as I recall.

I'm trying to retire from all the home mechanic stuff. I enjoy it when my sons are in to it but I am ready for a break!

They really are pretty good cars , that year range. I was a mechanic for years , all of them are about the same….as long as the maintenance has been done pretty decently, and they haven’t been overly abused, you should be fine.
just make sure you look at the important stuff….if you don’t know what to look for then take someone that does.
Good luck !! :)
