What to look out for on a 1998 mustang GT

Yup, same drivetrain as Crown Vic and taxi's run them over 300k miles regularly with scheduled maintenance.

Just try to talk your son into not wasting money on engine performance. The 2v 4.6l only wakes up with forced induction. Better to spend it on the suspension and plan for an engine swap when everything else is done.

Great cars. Parts are readily available. The 4.6 is a pretty common engine and reliable, like anything especially if it is maintained as mentioned above.

Some interior notes, watch the driver and passenger windows, the way the regulators work the window is basically glued to the metal bracket that rides the regulator. If the glue fails, the window gets wobbly and if your not paying attention may break when you slam the door (never close the door by touching the frameless window, it speeds up the failure). Its an easy fix, but you have to remove the window by drilling out a rivet in the aft regulator and readhere using high temp industrial glue gun.

Also the electric seat tracks tend to fail and stop going forward/back. Can usually tap the button a bunch to get it in position. Once he has it where he likes it, leave it the frick alone! Not sure you can find replacement motors or seat rails.

See if it has 2 keys. This year has a microchip in the keys, i forget if you need both keys to add or program another, so the loss of one may hang you up to require a dealer or programmer do it. The key themselves are fairly cheap now, i think $20.

The car is a bit tail heavy. Even my v6 would break loose and get squirrelly if i added too much power, especially not in a straight line. 18 year olds gonna play too, I bought mine when I was 20, 22 years ago.

I have 380k on my 1998 v6. Cant beat a stang.

Mine had this problem also, the seat track was stuck in the "all the way up" position so it was like sitting on a stack of phone books until the dealer was able to fix it. Took a couple of weeks, they went through a management change and they didn't want to honor the "we owe" paperwork.

I didn't think to mention this problem bc I didn't realize it was a common issue.

One question I forgot to ask - with no major issues and good top and paint, ac and heat work, what’s an average asking price for one of these? I don’t even know what is what anymore in todays Biden economy.

In case the seat track isn't working, parts are available to fix the electric seat or replace it with a manual version if set on keeping the factory seats. I'd opt for a new set of Corbeau seats to save all the hassle though & freshen the interior up.

Hard to say without pictures of car, but for a '98 GT that's in fair condition I'd say $3,500 - 4,500.

I owned several mustangs from the late 90's and I never had an issue with any of them. Mine were all 5 speed cars is the only difference. I'd look more at the previous owner than anything else. If you're buying this car from a 19yr old tiktok,IG influencer I'd run for the hills. If its a 35yr old weekend cruiser or commute car thats totally different. That 4.6 is a great little engine. Loves to be modified and is decent on gas.
