What to look out for on a 1998 mustang GT

My son is looking at buying a 1998 Mustang GT. Car has 100k miles on a 4.6l and auto transmission. Car has always been adult owned and “looks” to be in great shape. I’m not a Ford guy, I’m pretty much exactly the opposite and would buy Hitlers VW beetle before a Ford. But he has worked and saved for it and I don’t want to stand in the way IF it’s not just a terrible mechanical purchase. Online reviews seem mostly positive and the car only made 225 Hp when new so I’m assuming they aren’t hard on rear ends or transmissions. Any pointers or gotcha would be great if you have any!
F body 98-02 z28 is the way to go
Never selling mine

Looks like it has some decent mods too. A Saleen style spoiler, aftermarket bullet wheels, and a Mach 1 chin spoiler.

Some lowering springs, adjustable shocks/struts, and subframe connectors would be a great start on helping it's ability to cut corners safely.

The guy def. took care of it. The engine bay is cleaner than my dang house. We did discover the rear glass window has a leak, like the seal has pulled apart or something. I think its fixable based on a few google searches.

If he needs a throttle body & upper intake plenum for it, let me know. Got one I'd give him.

congrats! they are fun little cars but be sure to tell him they are light in the rear and will get squirrely in a sec! just watch youtube and all the grief stang drivers get. lol!

Common issues:

- Intake - good that it's been replaced

- spark plugs - the heads are relatively thin where the spark plugs thread through, and it's common for spark plugs to blow out of the head due to damaged threads. Plugs should only be torqued to about 11ft# to avoid issues. If a plug does blow out it can be repaired for about $80. I have the tool kit for repairs if you ever need it.

- Vacuum lines - lots of stuff runs off engine vacuum, and it's common to see CELs for lean codes due to dried out rubber connections and cracked hoses.

- the transmission, likely a 4r70w, is sensitive to trash in the fluid and develops shifting issues over time. Keep it serviced and it will work great.

Worth noting, the later three valve versions of this engine had more expensive valvetrain issues, but the these earlier two valve engines are much more reliable.

That was a concern of mine. But I can’t even get this thing to spin a tire. The Yukon he’s been driving has more rated Hp than this one does. (Which I consider a good thing!). It’s fun to drive but not as wild as some of the newer ones for sure. He can upgrade later when he’s on his own auto insurance plan!
