I still want to get a new one..I dont know how old it is.

I it's been 2-3yrs on that battery you could eek just a bit more out of it with a good recharge, w/ out overcharging it, and a trickle charger. Most batteries only see 3-4yrs at most. I can get a little more out of mine but I do a bit more maintenance to it and use a battery tender.
Try an AGM battery. Little stronger and less prone to heat and vibration which is what kills batteries besides sitting in a state of discharge.
Btw a car battery has roughly 4x the CCA of a motorcycle battery. Lot of amperage to put through a system with mostly 18-20ga wiring.
Also, you need to have a minimum 10.5vdc (general spec) under load (while cranking starter) If its been a while try a low amp charge for 3-4 hours. But don't leave it in unattended to or overnight. It will over charge or swell or worse. A little external charge every once in a while really helps extend the life of it. And always charge it out of the bike.

I had always heard you could jump a bike with a car, if the car was not running; just from the battery. I had to jump the FJR off like this recently (5 year old battery, worn out and going downhill for a while... finally got it replaced). Did I just get lucky and not fry the rectifier?

I always thought 12v was 12v no matter how many amp-hours you had.

Never had to jump the bike from the car. Put it on the charger instead.

BTW OP , you need a new battery don't waste your time with cheap advanceautoparts battery.Get a good one and be done with it...OR go to batteryplus and get a nice battery...Battery plus can also tell you what is wrong with the battery...There is one in conyers and hudson bridge stockbridge I am sure some are near you

You can jump a bike off using a car, just don't have the car running. The car's battery alone will have plenty of juice to jump start a bike.

Respectfully, I disagree. The running output and more importantly amperage, is much higher coming out of the battery than from the car. It will lessen the surge to a small degree but 800cca can and will fry ****. Compare that 180-200cca of a bike battery. It's not really rocket science. But hey, I like pressing my luck too sometimes.

Are the battery kits where you have to add the acid better or worse than a pre-charged battery?

I prefer the ones that comes pre-charged and with my years of working on them I have seen they last longer also under harsh conditions.
