The government doesn't view knives as a totalitarian encumbrance.

The logic:

1. AR15s are worthless against a government with F-15 fighter jets.
2. We must ban deadly weapons of war for civilians.

They also are putting a handgun transfer ban in place and eliminating new imports of handguns.

Basically what's in country is all that normal people can buy, and sometime in the next few months the government won't authorize any transfers of currently owned handguns. What you own is yours (for now), but you can't transfer it to anyone else.
