Most of the homeowner mowers aren't what you think they are. Commercial is a different game altogether. In the under $2000 range, it's almost a coin toss. There isn't much difference between the brands at that price. For example, the big box store John Deere mowers have Briggs engines. The JD S240 Sport, however, available from the dealer, has a Kawasaki twin, but gets into a $2500 range. Still, if I needed a mower and was wanting lots of features and willing to spend $2k, I'd spend the extra money and get the semi-commercial JD.

I've got a craftsman lawn tractor that's old but refuses to die. 22hp Briggs, 42" deck, think it's 12 years and still going strong. Headlight sucks though.
Don't know if they still make them this good.

For a 1/4 acre, any flavor of MTD would suite your needs. If you’re going to be racking up some hours doing the neighbors turf, then Id buy once cry once and go at least half commercial. A hyrdro 44” would be a good size for your yard but not too small for an acre. Gravely, exmark, hustler etc are some brands to pick from.
